The author relaxing in the warm California sunshine

Hello all!

Many thanks and welcome to all my new followers. It’s gratifying to be a part of such a wonderful, diverse business!

Today is the BIG EASY BLOG HOP! I was “talked into” this lovely tradition by author Cheryl Norman, an old pal and wonderful author. Thanks, Cheri! Check out her terrific list at Amazon. Cheryl’s books range from the romance of the road (Route 66 locales), Florida mysteries, a cruise ship full of nudists… and cookbooks! Take a moment to check out her diverse stories!

So, here are my answers to the posed questions.

What am I working on?

What am I NOT working on! I seem to have a lot in process right now, from introducing and marketing my Beacon Point Romances to writing the second half of THE GYPSY IN ME, the third novel in the StarCrossed Romance series. GYPSY takes places a few years after the ending to A HERO’S PROMISE, and involves the lives of the now grown children of romantic rivals, Mac & Dane; these big-screen heroes were introduced in StarCrossed Hearts.

Coming on June 19th is the third in the Beacon Point Romance series, ANGEL’S GATE. This is a great follow up to both POINT SURRENDER and CAPE SEDUCTION, all paranormal romantic mysteries that take place in California lighthouses.

How does my work differ from others in its genre?

Well, I’ve never much cared to worry about genres. I guess you could point to the lighthouses as a “different” aspect. Then there’s my Paulie & Kate duet, books about the tumultuous relationship between a bisexual glam rocker and his very straight make up artist. UNMASKING PAULIE BINGHAM has garnered rave reviews all around. I call this story “alternative romance.”

Why do I write what I do?

Good question. When I figure that out, I’ll let you know! Next?

How does my writing process work?

When I have an idea for a story, I am always writing. Early morning, late at night, driving around town…the characters are building the story in my head. I’m really no different than any other author in that respect. I do tend to edit as I write, which might make me a bit slower.

I think that’s enough for today! I’ll be back tomorrow to share a little more, including any authors who might be following me in this “hop!”

amazon-buttonAnybody murder anyone lately? Embark on a new romance? Find a new way to tell an old story?

This has been an interesting week for me. Thanks to some very flattering and well publicized reviews, books are selling. When books sell, apparently Amazon takes notice, and has started promoting. Goodreads, too, put my book in an email blast to past purchasers of my stuff. I’m jazzed.

I have to give a huge shout out to author and friend Kate Douglas, who so loved Paulie & Friends that she went WAY out of her way to promote the books to her own readership. Her fans are many, diverse and apparently open-minded. When Kate blabbed about Paulie in her newsletter, sales started happening, and I’m so very humbled and grateful. Kate, by the way, is an incredible writer and deserves those masses of followers!

Sandy Nawrot, reader and blogger extraordinaire in Florida, is a past fan and she took a chance on Paulie, too. I’m so tickled with her stellar review, and the fact that she claims she’s rarely surprised at anything and this book surprised her. Sandy doesn’t pull any punches; she was quite candid in her review, and again I find myself blushing and so appreciative.

I’m trying some new things for promotion, finding more inexpensive and pinpointed opportunities. Have discovered many things that do not work! I never thought 20 years ago I’d still be doing this. I thought I’d either be a big name author or have given up completely by now. Ha!

Friday Book (& Other) News: Do We Still Love the Nook?

Comments Off on Friday Book (& Other) News: Do We Still Love the Nook?

nook_color_5I used to make sure that every book I had out there was available on the Nook (and I still want to type that lower case but can’t make myself do it.) It’s because I’ve owned Nooks for years and really loved reading on them. My last one, the Nook Color, was also a quasi-tablet, so I could do a little other stuff on it as well. But it got so that the battery didn’t stay charged as long as I thought it should, and it was hard to keep it plugged in all the time. For Christmas, my hubby bought me the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and I never looked back. When I began publishing books, my first objective was to get them on Kindle, because that was the most requested format in my experience. Everyone either has a Kindle or a device with a snazzy Kindle app. I sort of forgot about the Nook, until a reader asked last week for a copy of Unmasking Paulie Bingham in the Nook (.epub) format. I quickly put together a properly formatted file and set up Beacon Street Books as a publisher at Nook Press. Voila! Both Paulie and Kate’s books will soon be available at Barnes & Noble’s Nook store. (Paulie is already there, Kate will follow this coming week.) Now to track down that reader and remind her!

In other news this week… Had the extreme pleasure of seeing Nickel Creek live at the Wiltern Wednesday night. I can’t describe for you the enthusiasm of the audience, the energy emanating from Sara, Chris, Sean and Mark. You’d think their strings – violin, mandolin, guitar and standup bass – would catch fire! LOVE their new tune “Destination” and you will too. This was the end of a 6 week tour, but their site shows they are heading out again so try to get tickets if they come near you–you won’t be sorry.

Beacon Point Romance Book Two

Beacon Point Romance Book Two

What’s going on this week? Well, in MY bookstore, Ever & Always debuted in paperback at Amazon. Putting out a print copy is no small feat — just ask any of my indie friends. Formatting pages and determining spine widths are not for the faint of heart. Ever heard of embedding fonts? Getting headers and footers to appear on the right pages? This is major stuff, my friends.

Also this week, both Point Surrender and Cape Seduction reappeared for Kindle after several months’ absence. (Here, we could also talk about the special challenges of ebook formatting, but it IS tiring.)

More exciting, I’ve decided to take my “California Lighthouses: The History & the Mystery” presentation out of mothballs and on the road. When I did this talk at the Santa Paula Library a couple of years ago, it was very well received. Now, updated to include more info on Angel’s Gate Lighthouse, the talk is better than ever and I’m hoping to be bringing it to local libraries and small bookstores soon. Stay tuned on that one.

Other news around the block: Lots a chatter of the packaging and pricing of “box sets”. Susan Griscom (my writing pal) and I both have series books and we’ve looked into how to capitalize on them. Amazon, of course, will allow us to “bundle” sets of books for sale, and we can even make a graphic of a box set to upload. The books, however, are merely shipped together, not packaged in any attractive way. I think where this is valuable is when hand-selling at a book signing, festival or convention. Having custom boxes printed is too costly, but I have an idea that involves some pretty card stock and sealing wax. Can’t wait to try it out.

Pricing is another matter. In the past, authors/publishers typically added together the prices of the books in the set and then deducted a small discount. Lately, however, I’ve seen box sets priced at one-half or less than the total of the books inside. This disturbs me, as does any ultra-discount and “free” pricing practices that seem to be so prevalent right now. I’m not criticizing those who do it, but I sure do lament that they feel they have to in order to get the attention of book buyers these days. But damn, with the easy access to multitudes of free books, who can compete and still hold onto their sense of self-worth?

Book pricing is a hot button for me, obviously. I can’t begin to pretend I understand it. I don’t seem to see a lot of difference no matter how I price mine. I know as a book buyer, I will pay (have paid) up to $10.00 for an ebook I really wanted. I prefer to keep it under $5.00, however. Right now, I have my books priced at $1.99 and $2.99, which seems to be about the average for relatively unknowns like myself. But I’ve seen a lot at $3.99 and $4.99. My first publisher charged $6.99 for ebooks with brand new authors and sometimes pretty marginal cover art. My second publisher charged $4.99 which I felt was a little high. She held that people expect/assume that the book is better and don’t mind the higher price. I agree with her, to some extent–mostly with regard to the inverse: books priced too cheaply might give the impression that that’s all they’re worth. That the author is somehow sub-standard and can only sell with deeply discounted pricing. Of course, that’s not necessarily true, but who can say what book buyers believe?

In the end, it’s clear that most of us aren’t in it “for the money” or surviving on royalties. I just wish we could at least attach a certain level of value to our books and be rewarded with moderate sales. I wish authors didn’t have to give away so much for free, thereby setting a precedent and teaching voracious readers that they really don’t have to pay for books anymore. It’s become a runaway train, and I’m still sitting in the station, wondering what happened.

Friday Book News: Contest!

Blank white book w/pathIt’s been a great week! Ever & Always successfully launched at Amazon Kindle Store, and the paperback will be available next week; ebook is also up at Smashwords in a multitude of formats, and will eventually show up at B&N for Nook owners.

Jack McKenzie is my lucky character. People love him. And the nice things about book heroes is, they don’t really age (unless you make them age.) Jack was originally created around 25 years ago so technically, he could be quite old now, but he’s still youthful and funny and hot. Which is good because…

Jack is one of the big stars in Angel’s Gate, due for release next month. In AG, he’s a little older, a little dissatisfied with his too-calm Nor Cal life and he longs for the excitement of the film industry in L.A. But when he goes back to check things out on the studio scene, he discovers that someone’s been looking for him, someone who has reason to believe they share a common lineage. Huh? Is Jack ready for this kind of news, when he’s just buried his father? But Jack’s fans know that this man will sort things out and make the world right again. And he’ll do it romantically, LOL.

Celebrating the upcoming release of Angel’s Gate is a contest at Goodreads! Check it out here… and read Ever & Always while you’re waiting for Angel’s Gate!

Back on the Chain Gang

Comments Off on Back on the Chain Gang

scalesI love Chrissie Hynde, don’t you?

Today, hubby and I got back on the chain gang when we walked back into Weight Watchers and stepped on the flat black demon. Yikes!

I learned something last week about blogging and Facebook and all that. Blogs are a penny a dozen (inflation) and rarely get read unless they are really controversial. My “Best Seller” post last week only got noticed to about halfway through the first sentence. (Maybe this is why Twitter is so popular? Short reading assignments?) Truth is, I didn’t have a best seller, I was only pulling an April Fool’s Day prank on myself because I’ve never had a best seller. I guess I should appreciate my friends and “likers” for assuming it was the truth, right??? Had anyone actually clicked on the link to read about the “best seller” or went in search of where to buy it, they would have seen my clearly silly story and laughed along with me.

I’m in no way offended. I’m just as guilty of not reading your blogs. But I do feel silly. Embarrassed. Now, I think I’ll have to write that memoir about my history of love, sex and lighthouses. But how….?

It worries me a little, though. If people are too busy to read a paragraph, to click on a link to read more, how will they ever have the time to go out and VOTE today? I mean, it looks to me that even if voting was ONLINE, voters might just click on a candidate’s name without reading their bio, their mission, their goals for the office. They might select a candidate that doesn’t even exist. Imagine that.24929_1256019848302_2217107_n

My words to you that have read this far, (after THANK YOU! of course) is to get up, step away from the keyboard, read your sample ballot that you got in the mail and put in a SAFE PLACE, then head on down to the polls. Please don’t assume your vote doesn’t count. Congratulating me on a non-existent book is nothing compared to passively letting non-existing politicians skew an election.

MY BEST SELLER!

Lying-April 1 copy

Can you believe it? Barns & Nobel just called ME to ask about stocking this book! Who would have thought that after all these years of writing, slaving over the keyboard, creating fictional worlds of love, grandeur, mystery… traipsing through all those stupid lighthouses, researching foreign lands I couldn’t care less about, answering insipid fan letters, sweltering in bookselling tents and running after book buyers with my hands out in desperation… I’ve finally hit the big time. Go figure.

You might notice there is no “buy link” in this post. That’s because the crappy publisher is behind in edits, and the printer is off today. Oh, and the cover models have filed a suit. Don’t look too closely at that cover, by the way, because we couldn’t get a high-res shot of the lighthouse so we borrowed this one from someone’s Pinterest page. I mean, who really cares?

Okay, gotta run. There’s a book signing in Needles I have to get to. Love you guys!!!
