E&A Cover reveal copyFans will be thinking:  ANGEL’S GATE! Cover Reveal! Yes!!!

But, no. Turns out, another book muscled its way into the front of the line. EVER & ALWAYS is a rewritten, updated version of an older novella, In Too Deep. It’s here that hero-and-sidekick Jack McKenzie makes his debut as a man at a crossroads, with a new baby and a one-night-stander complicating his life. Enter Madelyn Cross, a woman who’s all but given up on finding the right guy. A bizarre mystery from Maddie’s past, a trip around the world and some heart-rending soul-searching all serve to make EVER & ALWAYS “something every reader can relate to. Ms. Carter’s story is funny, touching, and poignant. A true pleasure from beginning to end,” according to Rhapsody Magazine. (Blush.)

Jack, of course, appears in both POINT SURRENDER and CAPE SEDUCTION as he pals around with and supports his friends, Case and Matt. In the upcoming ANGEL’S GATE, Jack returns as a main character seeking answers about his own heritage, while Maddie hides a life-altering secret. But while you’re waiting for ANGEL’S GATE, pick up a copy of EVER & ALWAYS next month so you’ll have the skinny on Jack’s colorful past!

These Cops Need Help

Comments Off on These Cops Need Help

It seems like we’ve always had crime drama and cop shows. FBI, CIA and local law enforcement. The crime scene-forensics shows and the profilers. The buddy cops, two guys, two gals, guy-and-gal shows. Cagney and Lacey? Remington Steele? Detectives, sheriffs, beach patrols and beat cops. Cowboys, space cops, long hairs and bald, Glock-carrying detectives. You know their names, ranging from Starsky & Hutch, McCloud, and Jim Rockford to Longworth, Blue Bloods and Jethro Leroy Gibbs. Who could forget (for those of you a little youth-challenged,) Officers Toody and Muldoon of Car 54 Where Are You? Pete Malloy and Jim Reed of Adam-12? The grand-daddy of all copy shows, Dragnet?

Castle-Season-3

Always fans of the crime drama, my husband and I watch several current shows every week. And lately, we’ve recognized a new trend:  the cop-helpers. As if our law enforcement heroes just aren’t capable of solving crimes on their own, these police buddies appear on the small screen weekly to assist with getting the bad guys. Topping this list is the venerable Richard Castle, novelist-turned-cop sidekick to the brilliant but obviously short-sighted NYPD Homocide detective Kate Beckett. Castle, being an amateur criminologist, comes up with wild theories and helpful clue-busters. Everyone loves “Cas-kett” and their humorous, romantic thread.

Other entries into the buddy-cop field include Elementary, Person of Interest, Perception, The Mentalist, Numb3rs and The Blacklist. In Elementary, modern-day Sherlock Holmes along with pal Joan Watson also shore up the NYPD homocide division. In Person of Interest, the NYPD gets a boost (and vice versa) from Mr. Finch and Mr. Reese, who use a high-tech “entity” to help them stop crimes before they happen. I often wonder why Detective Bell (Elementary) and Detective Fusco (POI) never meet up with Detective Beckett in Midtown?) In Chicago, Perception’s Dr. Daniel Pierce is a schizophrenic neuropsychiatrist and university professor who helps the FBI solve problems with mentally or emotionally impaired suspects, a talent they can use in just about any case.

In The Mentalist, pseudo-psychic Patrick Jane assists the California Bureau of Investigation and the FBI while working on his own agenda: to kill the man who murdered Jane’s wife and daughter. While not a true psychic, Jane is über perceptive and intuitive about people and details as a result of his upbringing among scam-artists and carnies. The now-defunct Numb3rs featured FBI special agent Don Eppes, who relied on his mathematical genius brother Charlie to sort out the probabilities of criminal actions.

Last on my short list is… The Blacklist. This show is, by far, one of the darker entries, as Red Reddington–the ultimate bad guy’s bad guy–supplies the FBI with the names of the world’s most devious villains. Red doesn’t rat out the underworld’s finest out of the goodness of his heart; he has his own dark agenda.

While I enjoy the cop-buddy angle, I think it’s about reached its peak. These particular shows are creative, thought provoking and entertaining, but it’s only a matter of time before TV crime writers create new scenarios to stimulate our imaginations. Let’s see… How about android cop? Oh, wait. Almost Human has that covered. Computer-enhanced Fed-operative? Ah. Intelligence. A small town sheriff who manifests a supernatural “trouble?” Yep, Haven. Can you come up with something new?

And yes, I know I’ve left out hundreds of great crime episodics. Feel free to comment with your favorite!

Once, when I was working (term loosely used, here) in sales, I was told by some trainer/superior/mentor that that key to successful selling is liking your product. If you don’t like it, she said, how can you convince someone else to like it? It is your passion that will sell this widget. Your desire to share this fabulous thingamajig with the world. Your absolute assurance that this little whatzit will improve their life, somehow.

So I’m here to tell you, I LOVE these books! I couldn’t be more passionate about the Beacon Street Mysteries, their dynamic, sexy, charismatic players, their twisty-turny plots. My utmost desire is that you give one or two of them a read! I assure you, you’ll feel rewarded.

Starfire 2013 -C concept copyThe update:  I’ve designed new and improved covers for all my Beacon Street mysteries, and am completely overhauling an early novel, expanding it to become the prequel to the set. I’m happy to do this, especially since I just finished the first draft of Angel’s Gate. I will soon announce a blitz of cover reveals and release-day blog appearances, followed by a nice blog tour to introduce the new book and its mates.

I’m dying to show you the new covers, but, well, there’s this schedule thing. This “dangling of carrot” idea. So sit tight… in the meantime, I have a novella up at Amazon that could use a few reviews!  Starfire, by Anne Carter, only 99 cents for your Kindle

NOW I Understand

1 Comment on NOW I Understand

F85When I first got my driver’s license, I was 16 and ready to take on the world. My parents, bless their hearts, found a $400.00, 1963 Oldsmobile F-85 (predecessor to the Cutlass) for sale at a finance company and bought it for me. I, of course, had begged for the 1965 Ford Mustang at the car lot on Topanga Canyon. It was a special edition, with tooled horses on the seat covers. My boyfriend had a 1966 Mustang, and we could have been almost twins. It was my pipe dream; the Mustang was $1800.00.

That Oldsmobile was a bit of a dog. My dad bought new seat covers (the kind you stretch on over the old ones) in black and white tweed. At some point, seat belts (lap only) were installed. The boyfriend installed cute little round mirrors out of the front fenders (trendy at the time). Unfortunately, that little maroon four-door also had a cracked engine block. What that meant to me was, I had to carry around a couple of gallons of water at all times, because the engine would routinely overheat.

CoinJarStill, I was thrilled to be driving to school. I parked on the street within a block or two of Van Nuys High. My mother, ever the nervous wreck, required that I call her every morning when I arrived. Remember, this is WAY before the days of anything like a portable phone. So, beside the front door at home was a cup full of dimes. As I left each morning, I took a dime from the cup. Once at school, I made a stop at the payphone booth in the lobby of the administration building and I called Mom.

I’m here.”

“Okay. See you after school.”

“Bye.”

Ugh. Grr. Hrmph. Didn’t see any other kids lined up at the phone booth in the morning.

Some days, either because I was late or just distracted, I forgot to call. On such days, I could count on there being a note on my windshield when I got out. “You forgot to call. –Mom”. Yep, she’d drive all that way and look for my car. Mortifying.

Forty-four years have passed.
SAMSUNGMy daughter is getting ready to take her driving test. Soon, she’ll be out the door in the morning, rushing, distracted, anxious to get a parking spot at Hart High. There is no cup of dimes by the door, and even though she’ll have a cell phone in her purse, she won’t be bothered to call me.

Feeling a very strong connection with Mom right now. I’m sorry, Mom, for being cranky. Sorry for the times I forgot to call. Sorry if I ever made you worry a day in your life.

Now I understand. I know there will be days when I’ll be tempted to take a little drive down Newhall Avenue, when I might happen to glance to the side, when I might glimpse the blue Highlander in the “Q” lot.

I also understand it’s not just about worrying over traffic and safety. It’s also ALL about letting go of the dependence. For eighteen years I have been her wheels (and her tether), logging countless miles and countless hours of mostly uninterrupted talk, confidences, laughter. The good news is, someday she’ll be driving me around, and hopefully, the confidences–and laughter–will continue…

What happens when a major earthquake changes life as you know it and the boy you thought you hated ends up saving you? Three times!

Courtland Reese is the guy everyone hates and makes fun of because … well, he is weird. He communicates with animals. Strange or interesting, seventeen-year-old Adela Castielle can’t quite figure out, but when he saves her from being trampled by her own horse, she begins to understand him a little better and wants to learn more about him.

But, Max–her best friend/dream guy/someday-to-be-her-husband-only-he-doesn’t-know-it-yet–hates Courtland with a passion. Adela wants to know why, except neither boy is talking.

When Max leaves her stranded in his parents’ wine cave with his worst enemy, Courtland, after what the experts are calling a “megathrust” earthquake, Adela starts to question her loyalty to Max as steamy kisses in a dark damp cellar only fuel her emotions with more conflict.

But does she really have time to worry about that when fire, destruction and mayhem surround her?

My Review, reprinted from Amazon.com:
This review is from: ALLUSIVE AFTERSHOCK (Kindle Edition)

Growing up in California, Susan Griscom is well acquainted with earthquakes–as am I, because I grew up there, too. When you’ve felt the ground beneath you rumble, buck and shake, you have an intimate knowledge of the power of Mother Nature, and Susan uses this knowledge and her memories to create a powerfully realistic backdrop for this novel. Add to that the sometimes painful coming-of-age feelings experienced by teens and you have a compelling, entertaining read.Adela, Courtland & Max are each typical and yet unique characters, and I came to like them all. Interestingly, Max isn’t given a POV, so his character is the least known to the reader; however, Susan does a good job of representing him through the others’ reactions to his words and deeds.

Like others, I felt the ending just a tad bit rushed, but that may be partly because I just wasn’t ready for the story to end! One thing’s for sure, Court’s the guy I’d want my daughter with if she ever suffered the kind of disaster faced by Adela.

(Cookies? Wait. I thought this was a BOOK Blog Tour~ ! It is, however, the HOLIDAY SEASON and that does mean BAKING OF SWEETS..).

So every year at this time, my daughter, niece, sister and I get together for what we lovingly call BAKING DAY. We even have a beautiful set of Christmas aprons (sewn by yours, truly) and we pull together the ingredients for a plethora of yummies. Standard fare includes your basic chocolate chippers and Magic Cookie Bars, peanut brittle and fudge. We rotate in and out other confections such as peppermint bark, rum balls, macaroons, lemon bars, haystacks and chocolate-dipped mega-pretzel sticks. In the end, we have a nice variety to make ups cookies plates for 7 or 8 other families. The event is a fun, sometimes wild, afternoon that really kicks off the season in our household!

My recipe:  Instead of giving you one of mine, I’m going to reprint one I’ve never made but which will be on the BAKING DAY bill of fare this year. LACE COOKIES drizzled with dark chocolate!

Lace Cookies (sometimes called “Florentines”)

Yield: 20 sandwich cookies

Cook Time: 8-10 minutes

ingredients:

1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons heavy cream
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ounces dark chocolate, melted

directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with Silpats or parchment paper. Set aside.lace-chocolate-sandwich-cookies

2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, and oats. Set aside.

3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine butter, cream, corn syrup, and vanilla. Mix with the beater blade until smooth. Slowly add in the dry ingredients. Mix to combine.

4. Drop about 3/4 of a teaspoon of batter onto prepared baking sheets. Try to make the cookies all the same size. Place only 12 cookies on each sheet because the cookies will spread in the oven.

5. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cookies cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes. Carefully transfer cookies to a wire rack and cool completely.

6. Find 2 cookies that are about the same size. Spread one cookie with melted chocolate. Place other cookie on top. Repeat with remaining cookies.

New (Re-)Release! STARFIRE by Anne Carter

Comments Off on New (Re-)Release! STARFIRE by Anne Carter

Starfire 2013 -C concept copyThis story started out as an experiment. I wanted to write in first-person POV, but didn’t want to commit to a full-length novel. It ended up being fun to write, and I’d like to write another one someday.

STARFIRE is about, oh, six chapters long, and it deals with obsession, betrayal, and morality. I don’t love the blurb because it sounds a little mundane. Maybe it is. You read the story, you decide. In fact, you can write me a new blurb if you want. I’ll consider all reasonable offers!

“Jennifer Lewis tells no one that her husband of eighteen years has left; not even when she meets the man of her dreams, popular screen personality Thomas Dutton, a man who challenges her resolve and her moral fiber. Is adultery still a sin if your spouse has disappeared? Would sleeping with her idol be a crime against his cold-hearted wife? Jenny must choose between honor and desire when she finds herself ignited by Tommy’s Starfire…”

See? It could be good, but it could be bad. Sometimes I’m just not good at blurbs. So it’s only 99 cents right now. If you buy it and don’t like it, I’ll credit you 99 cents against any of my other books.

I do love the new cover. This is Jenny & Tommy in Jenny’s Palm Springs hotel room. Just before they… oh, wait. You don’t like spoilers, do you? No, I didn’t think so.

Buy it for Kindle. If you need another format, contact me. I’m easy.

PS – I know there are many other books out there with this same title. I wrote mine first. Honest. 😉

Whisper Cape Trilogy Blog Tour: An Interview with Addie McKenna!

Comments Off on Whisper Cape Trilogy Blog Tour: An Interview with Addie McKenna!

Welcome to the WHISPER CAPE TRILOGY blog stop at Beacon Street! As you might know, author Susan Griscom has been making the rounds this past couple of weeks, and everyone’s talking about her new release, A SECRET FATE. We thought we’d shake it up a little and interview Whisper Cape’s heroine, Addison McKenna!

Tour banner 2013

Well, Addison. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a chance to talk. The last I remember, you were distraught, no, devastated is more the word, at Cael’s disappearance. It seems that Gerry, a man you’ve trusted and cared for as an uncle, used magic to alter Cael’s memories in such a way that he might not remember that he’d ever met you, much less loved you. Coupled with the fact that you weren’t sure Cael would even get back, how did you feel about Gerry’s actions? Did it change your relationship?

Answer: No. I could hardly blame Gerry. After all, Cael told him to do it. There is no point in blaming anyone but Finn. I just wish Gerry hadn’t gone back in time so far. He could have just wiped a few weeks or even a month away and that would have worked as far as I’m concerned. Five years is a long time. Gerry had his reasons for wanting to remove so much of Finn’s memory though.

Cael’s absence left a huge hole in your life, leaving the path clear for Aiden to help pick up the pieces of your shattered life. When Aiden approached you while you were in the depths of despair, you tried to turn him away, but he wore you down with a tasty offer. Share what he brought, how you reacted, and why.

Answer:  Well, I can tell you I wasn’t very nice. In fact, I was very rude. I didn’t want anything to do with the mam and I didn’t want or need his pity or sympathy. I knew deep down how Aiden felt about me. I also know what type of man Cael is and how he would have reacted if he came home and found Aiden in his house even if it was just to offer food. But I have a traitorous stomach when it comes to a juicy steak, particularly since I hadn’t eaten much of anything for a week or so.

The birthday party. A pivotal moment in your story. You’re there, trying hard to enjoy Breena’s tenth birthday celebration, and in walks the man who’s made all your dreams come true. Overwhelmed with love and relief, you start to rush forward but are held back. Did you think Maia’s actions were justified?

Answer: Absolutely. Especially now that I look back on the moment and the way Cael reacted to me later on. It was a wise decision to keep a low profile at that time.

Portrait of happy loving coupleOkay, any more than that will be spoilers! Let’s talk about you and Cael. Ahhh…. Cael.  What kind of man is he?  Let’s say it’s your birthday and Cael wants to get you a gift. Would he be most likely to… stop in at Macy’s or Victoria’s Secret…  take you on a hike with a backpack full of gourmet food and wine… or throw you a surprise party at Gerry’s bar?

Answer: Haha. I bet Cael would do all three. He loves to cook and so I’m sure he would prepare the perfect picnic basket. He’d most likely give me sexy lingerie before the party though, just so he could peel it off later.

You’re down with a bad cold. Cael has already committed to meeting Siena on important Sectorium business. Would Cael… cancel the meeting with Mom and stay by your side? … Hire a nurse to be at your beck and call until he can return home? … Ask Siana to come to your house and hold the meeting there?

Answer:  Hmmm. I don’t think Cael would be meeting with Siana on important business without me since we are a team now so I’m going to go with the third option. Besides, Siana needs to visit us more often anyway.

Last, tell us a secret about this luscious hunk of lovechops; something no one else knows, not even Susan! There has to be some little tidbit about Cael that only his lover, the woman of his heart, his lifelong soulmate would know… Give it up to us!

Answer:  Oh, really? Gosh. Um … let me think. Oh, okay this is top secret and he would be so upset if he knew I told you because, well, he has an image to uphold. Cael is extremely ticklish on his back. I can touch him firmly there, even run my nails down his back in the heat of passion and it doesn’t bother him, but if I gently skim my fingers down him too lightly, he squirms and can’t control his laughter. It’s really quite amusing and sets me off in an uncontrollable giggle..

Addie, thanks for taking the time to talk with us today. I know A SECRET FATE may be the last we hear about you for a while, but I also know your fans will keep the pressure on Susan to bring them up to date on your life with Cael, Gerry & Maia. So don’t get too comfortable, girlfriend!

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today, Pam. The interview was fab, and I hope we stay in touch. I absolutely love your blog!

No, thank YOU Addie (and Susan) for filling us in on some of your secrets! For those wanting… NEEDING… to know more about this sexy, exciting trilogy, keep on reading…

Celebrating the end of a trilogy is bittersweet. I love all the characters in the Whisper Cape series, but Cael and Addison own my heart and always will. Without them, I don’t think I would have become an author. At least not a published one. A Secret Fate, book three is now available.

Reflections (Whisper Cape book 2)

Publication Date: October 8, 2012

Book 2 in the Steamy Paranormal Romance/Suspense, Whisper Cape Series

What if you heard a voice whispering warnings while you coped with a frightening pregnancy?

Knowing the future has its advantages…or does it?

Can love survive the reflections and memories lost?

Welcome to Maia’s world.

Gerry has loved Maia from the very first moment he laid eyes on her and now that she’s pregnant with his child, he’s over the moon with happiness. Likewise, Maia is overjoyed about having Gerry’s baby, but when she starts seeing and hearing an old woman who warns Maia about the pregnancy, Maia starts to think she is losing her mind. But Maia’s nightmare has only just begun…

A beautiful woman, the talented lead singer in an up and coming rock band, sets her sights on Gerry determined to rekindle an old flame. But murder befalls the sleepy town of Whisper Cape once again, creating suspicion and betrayal, and a love once considered invincible, begins to crumble and fall apart.

Excerpt from Reflections:

Gerry sat up and rubbed his shoulder. “Thanks, Addie.” He followed her gaze to the place where they had last seen Cael. It pained him, but finally he said, “Addie. Maybe he can’t get back.”

“You don’t think Finn shot him, do you? Cael is strong.”

Gerry shook his head but wasn’t sure if she noticed. “No.”

“Once he got him away from here, I’m sure he used his skills,” she said. “I mean, Cael could take Finn in a fight anytime.”

“He might not be able to come back.” Gerry brushed a strand of hair out of Addie’s face.

“What? What do you mean?” She stood and Gerry got up with her. He moaned a little from the pain and stood next to her.

“I don’t think he got shot. I’m not sure exactly what happened to Cael. When the bullet hit me, I lost balance. He might have received some of my …”

“What? No!” Her face paled and she fought to take in air.

“Breathe,” he said, stroking her back as Maia walked up and stood by her other side.

“I don’t understand.” Her voice was barely a whisper. She walked to where Cael had wrestled with Finn. “What sort of memory were you sending?”

“That’s the problem.” Gerry shook his head. He didn’t want to have to tell Addie that she might never see Cael again.

A Secret Fate (Whisper Cape book 3)

Publication Date: October 31, 2013

Description:

“Well, fate was cruel, wasn’t it?”

Cael and Addison’s fate has taken an unexpected turn.

Gerry, Addie and Cael almost captured Careen’s murderer only to lose Cael in the battle—a battle that nearly cost him his life. But despite his survival, he faces a new challenge, thanks to Gerry’s handiwork: will Cael remember Addie or is their love lost with him?

Addie’s family and friends think she should keep the relationship a secret from Cael so he isn’t forced into feelings he can’t remember. Just what she needs, more secrets and on top of everything else, someone stole the crystal. How is she supposed to get over the loss of her lover, a lover she’d barely had for only a few short months and deal with the secret of the lost crystal at the same time?

Aiden wants nothing more than to help Addie overcome her grief and get over Cael. Or is that all he wants? What happens when too many people know the secret and someone slips up?

Teaser Excerpt from A Secret Fate

He lay half on top of her, their legs tangled together on the sofa as their rapid heartbeats slowly returned to normal. He didn’t want to move or let her go, but he’d have to. He needed to get up and leave. How would he ever look Aiden in the eye again? What a mess he’d gotten himself into this time.

She sighed. “That was amazing.” Resting her head on his chest, she leaned her face to his and kissed him, gently, softly, then closed her eyes and rested her head. They stayed that way, silent, for a while.

About Susan

I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, spending most of my time daydreaming or playing around in the mud. I grew out of the mud play, well, most of the time, a good soak in the mud is always fun. I still daydream often and sometimes my daydreams interrupt my daydreams. So I write to remember them. If I didn’t write, I think my mind would explode from an overload of fantasy and weirdness. To the annoyance of my friends and family, my characters sometimes become a part of my world. During my childhood, I would frequently get in trouble in school for daydreaming. Eventually, my vivid imagination paid off and I had the privilege of writing and co-directing my sixth-grade class play—a dreadful disaster, though not from my writing, of course. I’m pretty sure it was the acting.I enjoy writing about characters living in small quaint towns and tend to lean toward the unusual and edgy.My paranormal playing field delves into a different milieu, abandoning vampires and werewolves, but not discounting them. Someday I might like to write a novel about vamps and those furry creatures. But for now I like the bizarre mixed with romance. A strong hero or heroine confronted with extraordinary forces of nature, powers and capabilities gets my blood running hot as does an steamy contemporary romantic suspense.

After a not-so-wonderful young adulthood—shuffled from one foster home to another—Lena Benton had hoped marriage would be her ticket to happiness. Wedded a year after high school graduation, Lena was certain she’d found her knight. But when Troy Harington’s true colors surface shortly after their glorious day of elopement, things aren’t quite as rosy as Lena had envisioned. When an unforeseen event turns ugly, all she can do is … run!

But does she run far enough?

Jackson Beaumont prides himself on being a nature-loving, guitar-strumming carefree sort of guy, known for his eagerness to help injured animals find their way back into the wild. When Lena Benton walks into his bar, he’s once again swept off his feet with concern and desire to help the wounded. Will he risk having his heart torn apart again when the memory of the fawn he rescued as a child resurfaces?

Something about Susan

Susan 6-16-13I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, spending most of my time daydreaming or playing around in the mud. I grew out of the mud play, well, most of the time, a good soak in the mud is always fun. I still daydream often and sometimes my daydreams interrupt my daydreams. So, I write to remember them. If I didn’t write, I think my mind would explode from an overload of fantasy and weirdness. To the annoyance of my friends and family, my characters sometimes become a part of my world. During my childhood, I would frequently get in trouble in school for daydreaming. Eventually, my vivid imagination paid off and I had the privilege of writing and co-directing my sixth-grade class play–a dreadful disaster, though not from my writing, of course. I’m pretty sure it was the acting.

I enjoy writing about characters living in small quaint towns and sometimes they tend to lean toward the unusual and edgy.

My paranormal playing field delves into a different milieu, abandoning vampires and werewolves, but not discounting them. Someday I might like to write a novel about vamps and those furry creatures. But for now I like the bizarre mixed with romance. A strong hero or heroine confronted with extraordinary forces of nature, powers and capabilities gets my blood running hot as does a steamy contemporary romantic suspense.

Haunting Lighthouses – On National Lighthouse Day

Comments Off on Haunting Lighthouses – On National Lighthouse Day
In honor of today’s special significance, I’m taking a quick break from discussing my latest book to bring back a column I wrote a few years back. — Enjoy!

I do. I not only love lighthouses, collect them, and visit them, I haunt them as well. I guess you could place multiple meanings on “haunting” – I could be a spirit, looking for my lost love, my drowned sea captain, my missing child. But since I am not yet dead, that’s not the likely meaning.

Heceta cropped copyIt could be that I lurk in the world of lighthouses, traveling here and there to “haunt” their staircases, roam their keepers’ quarters, snapping my camera and taking notes. Living people do have their favorite “haunts,” as it were. Lighthouses surely are some of mine.

But actually, my form of haunting lighthouses has to do with creating tales of the supernatural and placing them there. (Aha! So that’s where she’s going!)

It’s common knowledge among lighthouse enthusiasts that these ancient, lonely beacons are often thought to be inhabited by spirits. The very nature of their purpose brings with it danger, isolation and hardship. Tragedy exists in the history of nearly every light station, histories fraught with violent storms, pirates, and madness. What better fodder for a good ghost story?

My first Beacon Street Mystery, POINT SURRENDER, takes place in a fictional California lighthouse that’s been abandoned for many years. Its last keeper has been dead for more than 25 years, and left behind a journal found by those who are now restoring the ancient, decaying tower. The journal tells a sad tale, and hints at why the keeper died there—but not a word about his missing family. Is the ghost that appears from time to time the keeper, or someone else?

Of course there’s romance and mystery—a hero and heroine, both with emotional baggage—and a cast of supporting characters that complicate their journey. The lighthouse itself is the best character, brooding, sad, filled with remorse. For hasn’t the lighthouse seen it all unfold?

The second paranormal lighthouse mystery, CAPE SEDUCTION, is set in an off-shore lighthouse perched on a deadly reef near the extreme northern California coast. The story takes us back to 1948, when a popular Hollywood starlet goes missing after the filming of a blockbuster movie set in the land-locked beacon. In 2008, the lighthouse begins to cause trouble for its present day owners, and the spirit of a young woman makes her presence known to many.

It doesn’t hurt to research those U.S. lighthouses “known” to be haunted. The house at Heceta Head Lighthouse in Oregon (shown on the cover of POINT SURRENDER) is said to be haunted by a young keeper’s wife. “Rue” seems to be mourning for a lost child, perhaps seeking her unmarked gravesite on the grounds of the keeper’s house.

I’ve been asked: do they scare me? Thinking about them, writing about them, walking among them? No. There is no record of any lighthouse ghost inflicting harm upon any guest. Do I believe in them? I think I would be some kind of fraud if I didn’t; I am, after all, a writer of paranormal lighthouse fiction!

Note:  POINT SURRENDER and CAPE SEDUCTION were originally published by the excellent small pub, Echelon Press. As things evolve and the industry changes, I recently decided to bring these books under the Beacon Street Books imprint, so soon you will see a pair of different–but similar–covers, along with new prices and formats. I appreciate your patience during this transition. The third Beacon Street Mystery, tentatively titled Angel’s Gate, will be available this fall!
